The first bōsōzoku were observed in the 1950s. Strongly influenced by American culture, and more particularly by the Hells Angels. These gangs most often share an interest in illegal modifications to their motorcycles. The movement reached its peak in the 1970s before gradually declining from the end of the 1980s.
