Nobuyoshi Araki’s Izumi, this bad girl serves as the sole photographic testimony to the dramatic, all-too-brief life of Izumi Suzuki (July 10, 1949 – February 17, 1986).
Suzuki moved to Tokyo in 1969 and became a fixture of the avant-garde—working as a bar hostess, nude model, actress and pioneering science-fiction writer—before her tragic suicide at just thirty-six years old.
This posthumous photobook stands alone in preserving her countercultural spirit through Araki’s unflinching gaze.
