Zyappu Magazine was a niche publication with a total run of 21 issues. Initially titled ジャップ (Jappu) in Japanese and Jap Magazine in English, it rebranded as Zyappu from Issue 12 onward, adopting romanization to appeal to a broader audience. Despite this effort, the magazine maintained its focus on elevated, artistic themes, finding a small readership in select Tokyo bookstores rather than mainstream outlets.
The magazine was spearheaded by photographer Izima Kaoru (b. 1954), whose New Beauty and Colored Beauty photo books influenced its aesthetic.
However, despite its distinctive identity, Zyappu struggled with limited sales and ceased publication in 1999, shortly after its fifth anniversary.
Izima’s ambition to elevate niche sensibilities over mainstream trends ultimately marked the magazine as a cult classic of 1990s Japanese art and fashion.
