Sawatari fell in love with Italian model Nadia while working with her on a commercial in 1971. Driven by the photographer’s desire to capture on film everything about the person he loved, Sawatari took the model with him to a long trip. Traveling to Karuizawa, Venice and other places, his focus on Nadia shifted between seeing her as a photographic subject and as a lover, resulting in a photographic story of mysterious beauty.
Nadia became known as a series that is still considered a seminal work of post-war Japanese photography to this day.
This is Sawawatari’s first photo book and the third opus after Private Life / Mariko Kaga by Yoshihiro Tachiki and EMMA / Ema Sugimoto by Shinji Okura.
Cover design Seiichi Horiuchi.
A very important photo book of the 20th century
