A masterpiece of postwar Japanese photography, Kamaitachi captures the surreal collaboration between photographer Eikoh Hosoe and Butoh dancer Tatsumi Hijikata.
Shot in the rural landscapes of Akita Prefecture in the 1960s, the series transforms local folklore into a haunting visual performance — blurring the boundaries between dance, myth, and dream.
Originally published in 1969 in a now-rare first edition, this 2009 Seigensha reissue faithfully reproduces the complete series, with new sequencing and commentary supervised by Hosoe himself.
